I’m looking to join the Marines within the next 6 months or so but I have bad vision (about 20/100 in each eye). The MOS I’m going for is something in Infantry or MP, so I know a tour in Iraq will be pretty much definite. However I’ll be damned if I take a round to the dome because I “dropped my glasses”…. how the hell would that look on my tombstone??
Anyway back on point….. I very much want to get Lasik surgery but I don’t know if I should try to do it before or after enlisting. If I get it done too soon before enlisting will they not take me? Is it an option to get it done after basic or is that not allowed? Will having it conflict with either of the job fields I mentioned above? And yes I know I’ll have to pay for it myself.
Will The Marines Take Me If I’ve Had Lasik Eye Surgery?

Check with a recruiter now about it. I’m not sure of Marine regulations, but Army regs state that really the only job you aren’t allowed to have with Lasik is flying.
they should. I was rejected 25 years ago because of my poor eyesight. I sure wish lasic had been around back then, I’d be drawing a nice retirement check right now.
YES they will take you. However you cant be a pilot for them because you have to have natural 20/20 (it is stupid but that is their rule). But you can be in the Marines they just restrict which jobs you can have.
It is a permant disqualification for enlistment into any branch of service if you have Lasik performed before you enlist. However, after you get in the military will provide it for you if you qualify. Dont get it done if you want to join the military. I would definitely recommend you contact a recruiter.
