Why Health Insurance Don’t Cover Lasik? Why Is It Concider Cosmetic?

I think that if they were to cover it, the insurance company in some way would be saving money. I’ve been told that the surgery helps you stay with good vision for years. In that way, for years you wouldn’t be using your insurance to get glasses or contacts.

    cuz insurance companies are cheap!
    thats it.

  2. Alicia L says:

LASIK will not “help you stay with good vision”. It doesn’t prevent the natural aging of your eyes. Even if you have LASIK, at some point in your life, you may still need to wear glasses. LASIK is not covered by most insurances because it’s not a medical necessity.

    Because insurance is a ripoff.

  4. Janell D says:

There are health insurances policies that cover lasik, the question is…. Do you want to pay the deductible for those policies?

  5. The Un-Cola says:

Most health insurance don’t even cover glasses is it a big surprise they will not pay for elective eye surgery.

  6. Steven B says:

The simple answer is that they don’t want to put up the money. Lasik surgery cost anywhere from $1700 to $2500 per eye. Both eyes double that cost. The insurance companies are betting that you won’t spend that much money on glasses or contacts during the time you’re insured under their policy.
Remember; most people have insurance through their employer. Few people stay with the same employer long enough to justify the expense. I’m not saying it’s right. It’s just the way insurers think.
Insurers could care less what’s best for you. They only care what’s best for their bottom line.

Because vision is correctable with contacts or eyeglasses, so it is not a necessary procedure. Not cosmetic, unnecessary. Plus it isn’t always permanent, especially after age 40, so they would be paying for glasses again. And if there are complications, it will get extremely expensive. Why would they pay for all that when you could wear glasses or contacts?

  8. Kathy Kouture says:

Hm you know before I’d say the cost and that there is something much cheaper and gets the job done. But if insurance is spending 300 bucks a year on your glasses why dont they just allow LASIK.
    Good point..

  9. Riley's Mommy says:

My insurance compay paid for 15% on each eye… and most companies do cover SOME of the cost. Just call them up and ask.

  10. eee says:

lasik corrects the refractive error in you eye. and it may not be perfect still after operation. so does glasses and contact lenses. then you should also question why the company doesn’t cover for contact lenses and glasses because they all serve the same purpose
