LASIK stands for Laser In-situ Keratomileusis.
What it actually means is that you are reshaping the cornea of an individual so that you can get rid of the need for glasses or for contact lenses
i.e. it is a surgical procedure to correct refractive errors.
The options are available for a person who is either far-sighted or shortsighted etc.
The primary refractive errors are myopia where a person needs to wear minus glasses, hypermetropia where a person needs to wear plus number
and astigmatism where a person needs cylindrical power. Now the options that are available to an individual are that he either wears glasses or wears
contact lenses. But if he does not want to use either of the two, then he can undergo this procedure, which is called LASIK surgery.
One more thing I need to add is that LASIK surgery is for removal of the power for the distance number only.
In old age or after 45 years of age a person needs separate glasses for reading and distance. This primarily is a procedure to avoid the need for wearing
glasses or contact lenses for distance.
The concept that is used for reading is that you can give a person what is called as a mono-vision.
Mono-vision actually means that you correct one eye for distance and the other eye for nearness and this is a concept for people who are not very exacting in nature.
The procedure is usually performed as an outpatient procedure and the patient receives topical anaesthetic drops into the eye
after which an instrument called the microkeratome is applied to the eye. This instrument cuts a very thin corneal flap
and this flap is lifted after which the laser treatment is applied to the cornea to reshape it. After the laser treatment is over the flap is repositioned
and once the flap is repositioned it usually sticks on to its place without the need of any sutures. The patient is comfortable immediately after the treatment.
There may be a slight foreign body or sandy sensation in the eye, but this settles down in just about a couple of hours
and the patient progressively starts seeing much better without his glasses and the following day the patient has excellent vision in the treated eye.
The patient may feel a little bit of pressure on the eye as the instrument is applied but there is no sensation of pain.
The patient is quite comfortable as the procedure is performed and after the treatment there is no pain but the patient may feel a little bit of irritation or weakness in the eye,
which settles down in about two to three hours.
Some of the common side effects that people experience who undergo LASIK are transient dry eye symptom which persists for about six to eight week,
for which the patient requires to use artificial teardrops. The second is some amount of glare while driving at night especially in the initial four to six weeks’ period,
and these are all transient symptoms that usually settle down by two months.
As with any surgical procedure there are certain complications, which can happen while the LASIK is being performed. This is mainly related to microkeratome,
which is applied to create the corneal flap, and there are certain complications, which can happen in the post treatment period.
Each and every patient who undergoes the treatment should discuss with his refractive surgeon, in detail, about all the complications
that are there and only after signing an informed consent should the patient proceed with the treatment.
The complications are very rare, and even if they occur, they can be properly managed.
How much does a regular LASIK surgery cost?
On an average, LASIK procedure in Delhi would cost about Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000.
The zyoptix or the customised LASIK procedure would cost anywhere between Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 36,000.
The FDA is looking into it, you had best check with them.
